Main problems of the N52 engine

  • Unsuccessful piston group (on the first engines until about 2007) High oil consumption
  • Hardening of MSC (valve seals) with a mileage of 80 - 100,000 km High oil consumption up to 1 liter or more per 1000 km
  • Rupture of the membrane of the crankcase ventilation valve (crankcase ventilation valve) Unstable engine operation, whistling, oil consumption
  • Problems with the Vanos system Poor traction at low speeds, unstable idling, errors in the vanos system
  • Exhaust camshaft and bed wear Knocking noise, low oil pressure
  • Coking of piston rings Oil consumption more than 1 liter per 1000 km
  • Problems with the Valvetronic motor Unstable idle
  • Problems with the DISA system Errors, knocking in the intake manifold
  • Valve cover gasket leaking Burnt oil smell
  • Chain stretch and guide wear Knocking, loss of dynamics, errors in camshaft position
  • Electric pump Engine overheating

BMW workshop recommendations for servicing the N52 engine

Change the oil at least every 10,000 km. We recommend only high-quality synthetic oil with a viscosity no lower than 5W-40, 0W-40. When using 5W-30, 0W-30 oils, the probability of exhaust camshaft and bed wear is almost 100%

Replacing valve stem seals when oil consumption is over 400 ml per 1000 km. Usually with a mileage of 80-100 thousand km

Repair or replacement of KVKG with a mileage of 100-120 thousand km. For engines with a metal valve cover, it is more advisable to replace the entire valve with tubes; for a plastic valve cover, it is optimal to carry out repairs by replacing the membrane

Installation of a repair kit or replacement of DISA control units. The large (outer) DIS has a resource of approximately 100-150 thousand km, while the small (lower) DIS has a resource of more than 200 thousand km. If repairs are not carried out in a timely manner, the damper is destroyed and small elements enter the engine, causing it to fail.

Replacement of the main chain after a mileage of 200 thousand km

Maintenance of the Vanos system according to condition. With a mileage of 100-150 thousand.

Replacement of the Valvetronic motor when errors occur or when the engine is unstable, usually with a mileage of more than 100 thousand km. When replacing a motor, engine adaptation is often required (“installation of Valvetronic stops”)
