BMW Z4 E89 - Common Problems

1. Engine and intake

N20 (20i/28i)

  • Timing chain stretching – characteristic cold diesel sound, timing errors.
  • Oil filter housing cracks (OFHG) → oil leak onto the belt.
  • Idle vibration due to worn engine mounts.
  • Valvetronic problems – position sensor or motor.

N52 (sDrive23i / 30i / 35i)

  • Oil leaks: valve cover, oil filter gasket.
  • Hydraulic lifters – knocking when cold (especially early N52).
  • Vanos valve, solenoids – timing errors, loss of power.
  • Electric water pump – sudden failure, overheating.

N54 / N55 (35i / 35is)

  • High-pressure pump (HPFP) (especially N54).
  • Ignition coils and spark plugs – frequent replacement.
  • Intake deposits (N54) → walnut blasting required.
  • Wastegate rattle (N54) – turbine rattle.

2. Electrical

  • Roof/hydraulic position sensor failure (electric cable breaks near the hinge).
  • GWS (automatic transmission selector) – sometimes glitches.
  • PDC parking sensors – rear sensors fail.
  • Alternator voltage regulator – power surges at idle.

3. Transmission

ZF 6HP / 8HP automatic

  • Noise when shifting → oil change required (despite "lifetime").
  • Valve body: jerking when shifting 2→1 or 3→2.

Manual transmission

  • Clutch release bearing.
  • Worn transmission mount → vibration.

4. Suspension and steering

  • Stabilizer bars – a common consumable.
  • Front strut support bearings – crunching/knocking.
  • EPS rack – play, clicking on bumps (very common on the E89).
  • Worn lower control arm bushings → vibration when braking.

5. Body and interior

Water in the trunk – a problem with the ventilation valves.

Worn roof mechanism:

  • clogged drains,
  • roof position sensors,
  • hydraulic cylinders leak over time.

Worn soft-touch coating – peeling.

6. Cooling

  • The electric pump and thermostat are the weak point of all N52/N54/N55/N20 models.
  • Cracks in the expansion tank.
  • Overheating due to a faulty pump → emergency mode.
