BMW B48B20O1 / B46B20O1 Service Manual. Comprehensive documentation on repairing the 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, widely used in BMW 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 Series (F/G body styles), as well as the Mini Cooper. The manual contains:
- Step-by-step instructions for timing chain repair and replacement.
- Sensor and electronic unit wiring diagrams and pinouts.
- Technical specifications and approvals.
BMW 3 Series G20 320i B48B20O1 / B46B20O1
B48 engine life
With normal maintenance:
250,000–350,000 km
How to increase life
- Change oil every 7,000–10,000 km
- Use 98 octane gasoline
- Monitor engine temperature
- Do not turn off immediately after boosting
Common BMW B48 Problems
1) Vibrations at idle
Causes:
- Engine mounts
- Spark plugs/coils
- Slight uneven operation due to calibration
This problem occurs in many B48 engines and is considered "normal" if the vibrations are minor.
2) Increased oil consumption
Not as critical as with the N20, but it does happen. Typically:
- Up to 0.5–1 l / 10,000 km is normal
- Causes:
- Crankcase ventilation
- Worn oil scraper rings (rare)
3) Cooling system problems
- Failure of the pump/thermostat (often after 80,000–120,000 km)
Symptoms:
- Increased temperature
- Cooling misfires
- Cooling malfunctions
4) Antifreeze leak
Possible points:
- Connections
- Expansion tank cap
- Heat exchanger
5) VANOS / Valvetronic problems
Rare, but can occur:
- Uneven idle
- Loss of power
The most common problem is contaminated oil → sticking mechanisms.
6) Oil Leaks
Often from:
- valve cover gasket
- oil seals
- heat exchanger
Occurs more often after 80,000–120,000 km.
7) Timing Chain Rattle (more common in early models)
Not as common as with the N20, but does occur.
Typically manifests itself as:
- cold start
- "crack" sound
On facelifted versions, the problem is significantly reduced.
8) Turbocharger
More reliable than older engines, but:
- may cause a whistling sound
- loss of power
- boost errors
Usually wears out after 150,000–200,000 km.
