- engine made of composite magnesium-aluminum alloy;
- the cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy;
- the cylinder head gasket is the same as in the N52;
- the crankcase ventilation system on the N51 was modified compared to the N52 and integrated into the plastic cylinder head cover;
- stepless Bi-VANOS system;
- Valvetronic II system;
- plastic intake manifold;
- injection manifold;
- 2nd generation cooling system;
- connecting rods and crankshaft are made of forged steel;
- secondary air supply system;
- the geometry of the combustion chamber in the cylinder head has been optimized;
- use of aluminum bolts with minor modifications;
- cast iron crankshaft, same as N52;
- the BMW H51 engine has a lower compression ratio, and therefore the cylinder head has been changed with a modified design of the combustion chamber;
- a crankcase ventilation valve is used, which is built into the cylinder head cover;
BMW N51 (3.0L SULEV) Weaknesses and Typical Error Codes
Area, Common Problem, Cause and Symptoms
Oil Leaks, Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG), "A common problem for all BMW inline-six engines. The gasket hardens and begins to leak, which can cause oil to leak onto the drive belt."
Valvetronic System, Servo (Motor) Wear, "The electric motor that controls the variable valve lift fails. This causes a loss of power and Valvetronic malfunction."
Valvetronic System, Eccentric Shaft Gasket, Oil leak under the valve cover. Requires removal and replacement of the eccentric shaft seal.
DISA System, Intake Manifold Flap Failure, "The N51 uses a three-stage intake manifold with DISA flaps. The flaps can break, and parts of them can enter the cylinders (although this was more common on earlier versions)."
Cooling system, Electric water pump. The electric pump has a limited service life (typically 100,000-120,000 km). A malfunction leads to rapid overheating.
VANOS system, solenoids clogged with oil deposits. This causes unstable idle and loss of power.
SULEV problems, Low-pressure fuel pump (LPFP) and sensor. "The N51 has a more complex unit with a sensor in the tank. The problem is often related to a failure of the sensor, not the pump."
Code, Description Probable Cause (N51)
2A9A / 2A98, "VANOS, Inlet/Exhaust Solenoid Fault", Contaminated or failed solenoids.
2A82 / 2A87, "VANOS, Inlet/Exhaust Mechanical Fault", "Oil pressure problem, worn VANOS components, or stretched timing chain."
2D06, "Air Mass, Plausibility (MAF) - Unrealistic air flow readings", Most often associated with an air leak (vacuum leak) or a faulty MAF sensor.
2A31 / 2A32, "Valvetronic, Actuator Fault", Actuator actuator malfunction or worn eccentric shaft.
2F58, E-Box Fan Failure – E-Box Fan Failure. "The fan that cools the engine control unit has failed. The fan requires replacement."
P0171 / P0174, System Too Lean (Bank 1/2) – The mixture is too lean. There is a large air leak in the intake system or a malfunctioning DISA valve.
P0420 / P0430, Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold – Low Catalyst Efficiency. "On the N51, the catalytic converter is covered by the SULEV warranty, but its low efficiency may indicate aging or fuel delivery issues."
